Physician coverage is needed for emergency medicine (EM) at a critical access hospital. This ongoing coverage requires continuous availability without gaps. The current setup includes two providers working in 12-hour shifts per 24 hours, supplemented by Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Providers are expected to handle 1.5-2 patients per hour on average, with 12 hours of mid-level assistance during peak hours. Proficiency with the Meditech electronic medical records system is necessary, as well as comfort in treating patients of all ages. A minimum of 250 case logs from the past year is required.
North Dakota mandates that all EM providers practicing in the state hold an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification. Comfort with a wide range of procedures, including intubations, chest tubes, central lines, critical care, procedural sedation, airway management, obstetrics/gynecology and deliveries, and adult and pediatric resuscitation, is required. Although this is a critical access hospital, it has substantial support staff akin to a larger facility.
The credentialing timeline is approximately four weeks or shorter, with temporary privileges available. APPs typically work from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with additional support on Mondays due to higher patient volumes.
Travel arrangements include flight, hotel, and rental car, with mileage covered. While the client provides preferred hotel options, no first-class tickets or upgrades will be available. Local candidates are preferred and prioritized over those requiring travel.
